My very first impression was that the fingers on the splash screen should be removed; they do not do the program justice. But when the program does open, WOW, what an improvement on PD6, the black interface is very pleasing and is following the tradition set by Power2Go 6 and Power Producer 5. Loved the new magic motion, the range of available options for movement is very impressive. The multiple PiP tracks has been a long awaited welcome addition, however, very disappointed that the fade in/out had been missed out in the beta*, there were times when I wanted to revert back to PD6. *CyberLink have been advised by many Beta testers of their displeasure, and is set to be corrected in a release. There were a couple of other niggles I reported on which is the role of a Beta tester. Overall PD7 is a great improvement over PD6 and with a few tweaks will be even better.

The sheer usability of the CyberLink PowerDirector 4 video-editing package makes it ideal for beginners. But though it excels at editing basics, the program doesn’t offer the intermediate and advanced features found in like-priced entries such as Pinnacle Studio. PowerDirector is fine for occasional projects, but video hobbyists will quickly yearn for more.
PowerDirector is easy to like at first, with convenient capture functions like 6X real-time tape scanning, batch capture, and a range of scene-detection options. Timeline editing is also superb, with a great multitrim tool that lets you quickly select short scenes from within one long capture file, and several other precision trimming functions. The program’s fixed-window interface resists clutter, and the tools are logically and consistently located for ease of operation.
Once we got below the surface, however, our ardor waned. For example, the program did poorly at automatic color correction, compared with other consumer editors. PowerDirector’s picture-in-picture (PiP) track is a good way to add watermarks or logos to your projects, but it is video only, which limits its use. The titling tool enables one text string per title, which is limiting, and offers neither title backgrounds nor design primitives to enhance readability.

Budget video editing has never had it so good. With the capabilities of an average PC now easily able to cope with the demands of cutting, overlaying and playing back video edits in real time, the competition among providers vying to offer the best features for the best price – along with ease of use – has really heated up.
That’s great news for editors, but the problem still remains of which option to go for – which is more important, in-house effects and pre-prepared style templates, or in-depth functionality allowing greater creativity? Ultimately, you have to take a look at what’s on offer and decide what suits you best, but PowerDirector enjoys a decent reputation, offering the ability to make good edits without a steep learning curve, while it also offers a fair amount of style templates to experiment with and some decent customisation.
