Ever since the acquisition of Alias by Autodesk, a sibling rivalry has been brewing between Maya and 3ds Max. Autodesk has decided to keep the current development cycles for each product intact and it appears that Maya has won the first race making this year’s release available several months before Max.
The latest releases of both Maya and Max have focused on improved performance and productivity and although this isn’t a feature that you can access in a menu, over time you’ll come to appreciate the improvements. After using the product for several weeks, I’ve already noticed the difference. The product is much more stable, responds to commands quickly and is generally easier to work with.
Along with the increased performance, Autodesk has also improved Maya’s ability to take advantage of multi-processors by threading is tasks for its Windows and Linux builds. This enables Maya to run even faster on multi-core computers.
