Whereas some might prefer the traditional interface and stability of Cyberlink’s PowerDVD, WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray is definitely the reigning champ. Having said that it’s not without its faults. Most noticeable is that you can’t select WinDVD 9 for playing only some video and audio file formats, as it does not use file associations. This means you can’t designate it as your default player for MPEG-2 HD and use something else for MOV and WAV files. Still, while it’s not entirely perfect, Corel has a winner on its hands – at least until the next release of PowerDVD.

WordPerfect Office doesn’t change much with each new version, but that’s one reason why thousands of loyal users won’t abandon it for the high-tech novelties of each new version of Microsoft Office. After a few days of working with the just-released WordPerfect Office X4, I’ve decided I like the latest WordPerfect largely for the same reasons I liked most of the older versions, and I get annoyed with the new version largely for the same reasons the older ones annoyed me. WordPerfect still manages large documents and fine-tuned typographic formatting better than Word does; Quattro Pro and Presentations remain adequate though less-powerful substitutes for Excel and PowerPoint; and WordPerfect Mail is a well-designed e-mail program with powerful searching ability. WordPerfect won’t dethrone Office 2007, but there’s a lot to like in this latest version of the venerable suite.

There was a time, long ago, when WordPerfect ruled the DOS word processor world. WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS was a thing of beauty and a joy to behold, in my mind one of the best programs ever written. It could handle long documents with aplomb — something, even all these years later, Word still has trouble with — and it had a macro language that was easy and intuitive. When your formatting got messed up, you could reveal codes and fix it in a jiffy. In addition, WordPerfect Corp. had the most competent technical support staff in the business, and it was free.
